James L.

James L. is a California-based abstract expressionist known for his rich, layered acrylic works. Using palette knives instead of brushes, he builds his pieces with up to 40 layers, often scraping through the surface (a technique called sgraffito) to reveal bold color shifts beneath. His work balances structure with spontaneity—each piece evolving on its own terms, often invoking emotional depth through textured surfaces and vibrant splashes. Inspired by Gerhard Richter and the Abstract Expressionists, James L. believes “beauty generates healing,” a theme reflected in both his process and finished work.
